A group works on a large painting while exchanging creative direction

Take turns directing

Who Takes the Lead?

What happens to a painting when someone new sets the direction in every round? Participants take turns leading the creative process while the group builds on earlier decisions.

How do we approach this workshop?

The group creates one painting in short rounds. Each round, someone new suggests a direction in colour, composition or movement. Everyone translates that idea into paint before handing the work to the next director.

Read the full approach: four creative stages

From first idea to finished artwork

  1. Create a common starting point

We look at accessible abstract compositions and agree on a simple theme such as movement, city or nature. The canvas receives a background of broad colour areas. We then agree on short painting rounds, each with a different creative director.

  2. The first creative director

The first participant chooses one clear direction: warm colours, diagonal lines or perhaps a bold focal point. Everyone paints at the same time, interpreting the instruction in their own way. The director may clarify the idea but cannot make every mark personally.

  3. Hand over the lead

After a few minutes, someone else takes over. They observe the existing painting and decide whether to reinforce it, add to it or introduce a new direction. The group repeats this several times, responding to earlier marks, unexpected shapes and one another’s ideas.

  4. Finish the painting together

At the end, we put the rules aside. Looking at the canvas from a distance, we decide where it needs more contrast, connection or breathing room. We add the final touches as a group and give the artwork a title.

What happens during the creative process?

Leading becomes tangible: how clear is an instruction, how much freedom do you leave, and what do you do with the previous director’s work? Rotating the role lets everyone experience both setting direction and making space for others.

What do you take away?

One shared abstract painting that brings together different decisions and styles. The group can take it away or display it at work.
